Tuesday Night, June 16, just before the USGA Open that didn't ever seem to end, The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association held its annual awards dinner in Greenwich, CT at the Hyatt. I took the Mrs. because the honoree was Louise Suggs, one of the original founders of the Women's Professional Golf Association in 1950, one of thirteen including the great legend that actually was Babe Didricksen Zaharias.
Now better known as the LPGA it is the elite tour for women players the world wide with total purses exceeding $50 million. Miss Suggs now an octogenarian was as sharp as a tack and was the final recipient of the evening with presenters including the King himself Arnold Palmer presenting the Winnie Palmer Award. David Feherty, as full of himself as ever also talked as did America's Favorite "CBS lead Announcer" Jim Nantz.
Over 600 writers of various abilities and reputations ranging from the likes of yours truly to George Peper as well as every media type on any airwaves within 100 miles of New York City.
The MGWA awards dinner each year raises substantial money for the caddie scholarship funds of the MGA. This worthy cause is supported by the sales of Raffle Tickets at $5 each or 5 for $20. None of my sold tickets this year won I am sad to say. When next years diner comes around, I'll remind everyone and anyone wanting in I'll get tickets for you. Why a raffle? Great prizes. Rolex was honored as Tournament sponsor of the year in 2009 and part of their support for golf including the inspiring commercials with the Elgarian music inccludes a Rolex Men's timepiece as the grand prize. sadly this year Ron Sirak of Golf World, sitting one seat from the head spot on the dais, won the watch to many a boo. I'm deadly serious.
Other prizes were A golf week in Argentina (Providers of wine for the dinner)including airfare, 5 days in the Carribean with golf and airfare, other including Orlando Golf, Callaway clubs this is a worthy raffle. Anyone wanting to attend, I can secure as many tickets as needed and redanman golf can get an entire table for 2010 if we can get enough. It'd be really easy to get some golf in and (having stayed there perhaps as many times as any hotel on earth) the Hyatt Regency Greenwich is a very nice hotel.
Sorry not to have extended the invites this year but I thought of it too late and as late as I am reporting, oh well ... it's lightening up and I can write more very soon.
